Nuclear power generation

Nuclear power generation

We use electricity for a lot of things like lights, home appliances, machines of factory, communication equipment…..We produce this electricity from thermal power, nuclear power and new & recycle power mostly. Among these ways, in Korea, nuclear power generation accounts for nearly 33 percent of the electricity generation. In other words, nuclear power generation is very important for our living. Then I will talk about strengths of nuclear power generation.

1. Uranium, the fuel of nuclear power generation, is buried all over the world. So we don't have to worry about oil shock or energy weaponization a lot.
<World uranium reserves from wikipedia - List of countries by uranium reserves>

2. Nuclear is eco-friendly energy. CO2 is one of the hot issue all over the world.

According to this picture, coal and oil which we use most emit CO2 most. On the contrary to this, nuclear emits little CO2. Even this occurs when nuclear power plant is being built. (No CO2 is emitted during nuclear power generating)

3. Nuclear is one of items for export. Korea already contracted with UAE, Turkey. And Jordan and India consider asking to build nuclear power plant to Korea.

Except this, there are many stregnths of nuclear power generation. For example, nuclear is economical power (by using a little of fuel, we can produce a lot of energy), and so on.

Of course, we have many problem for nuclear safety. But our researchers are studying hard to solve them. I can't assure that nuclear is safe, but we cannot help using nuclear power because thermal power generation emits a lot CO2 and it needs fossil fuel or oil. Also, new regeneration energy is unstable and more inefficient than nuclear.

    1. I didn't know that nuclear energy has little CO2 emission. Coal, oil and natural gas are most common energy for us but according to the chart above, their amount of CO2 emission is enormous. I hope we can use nuclear energy more efficiently.

  2. Hi im hyein:) Nice work on explaining the emergy sources! I sure do think that energy is a big issue for our generation and also for the future generations. I believe that although nuclear energy brings benefits, it also possesses enormous harms. If it leaks, people living near the plant or even people in distant areas get a huge influence. As all things are like a double-edged sword, I think researchers need to carefully consider the good and bad of nuclear energy and use it wisely :)

  3. it is very interesting to read your blog. As a chemical engineer, i learned lots of things about the energy issue on your blog. I've learned that there are still many problems to make nuclear energy more efficient. Plus, safety measures should be taken to operate it.

  4. Hi I'm HyungWook! It's really sophisticated topic to choose. And it's really good that I could learn about your topic. While I read about your topic, I could learn about how efficient nuclear energy is. But, I think you somewhat underestimated the side effect of nuclear energy; Europeans eagering to reduce it and there must be a reason for that- usually safety issue. It still is agreeable that we have no other option, so I generally enjoyed your writing!

  5. Hi! I'm interested in nuclear energy, too. I learned that nuclear energy is ecofriendly, but it's somewhat dangerous because if the system generating nuclear energy breaks down, then the ecosystem around that system will be deteriorated. So, we have to be careful when generating nuclear energy.
